BUMBA MEU BOI
Bumba Meu Boi is a folklore festival which takes place especially in Maranhão, Sao Luis state, Northeast of Brazil. It happens in June in some states in Brasil. The legend is about a laborer’s wife who was pregnant and wanted to eat a tongue of the best ox in the farm. She had her desire satisfied but the servant had a miserable life after his master discovered the death of his favorite ox. Healers were called to bring life to the ox and they succeeded.
It is believed that the story started around the 17th or 18th century with European, African and Indigenous influences. The folklore festival started during the raising of the cattle trade and sugar cane harvest.
