Lilith Rising
A truly controversial figure, the goddess Lilith was purported by Rabbis in the 6th century to be Adam’s first wife, created at the same time from the same earth and equal to man. It’s said that she was banished from the Garden of Eden when she refused to be subservient to her husband. Other accounts claim she sprouted wings and flew away under her own volition. Demonized as unclean, a seductress or the demon queen, Lilith was portrayed by ancient scholars as lesser than her male counterpart.
I prefer the more feminist interpretation of her as the symbol of the powerful potential in all women. Women are often characterized in a negative light or even considered mad when they express their authentic voice by those afraid of our true nature. One thing is clear. Lilith had a great sense of herself, a mind of her own and wasn’t afraid to express it.
